abstractAcute rhinosinusitis is a very common ailment in general medicine. It often clears up spontaneously or with the use of symptomatic drugs. In some cases, which are impossible to predict, it can turn into a chronic form, with changes to the mucociliar clearance. Preventing a condition of acute rhinosinusitis from turning into a chronic one does not depend on antibiotic treatment. In fact, the pathogenesis of chronic rhinosinusitis is still unclear. However, defining a diagnosis as precisely as possible is a task that is not without clinical significance and influences on treatment. Sinusitis that persists for more than four weeks but for no longer than three months can be defined as sub-acute. After three months, recurring with more than four long episodes per year, it can be defined as chronic sinusitis. The case presented here shows us how this condition can be moderately incapacitating for the patient’s professional or social life. So here an algorithm is presented for efficiently managing rhinosinusitis, from the correct diagnosis to the choice of the most effective treatment: symptomatic, antibiotic or even surgical treatment.
