abstractMore than 10,000 doctors were interviewed in order to study the relationship between the doctor and the terminally ill patient. The respondents were between 40 and 50 years of age, and lived in seven European countries. The results: on average, family doctors assist 2-5 people in the terminal phase each year. The Italians (30 percent) were less in favour of euthanasia than their European colleagues (60 percent), as they fear a change in social conscience and are convinced that greater availability of palliative care could lead to a decrease in demand for it.
European doctors are more willing to respect the desires previously expressed by the patient; all agree that decisions should not be totally delegated to close relatives, and are confused about the role of the trustee. Just under half of the respondents have been trained on how to use palliative treatments. |
