abstractThe inflammatory neuropathy of Guillian Barré syndrome, caused by infections of Herpes zoster, Campilobacter jejuni, Mycoplasma, Haemophilus influentiae and Citomegalovirus, has an incidence of 4 in every 100,000 people aged over 75. The first symptoms are growing asthenia affecting first the lower limbs then the upper ones, followed by the appearance of sensorial and motor defects, problems with swallowing, the cardiac and respiratory muscles. A protein test of the cerebrospinal fluid confirms the diagnosis. The treatment consists of repeated plasmapheresis or of administering immunoglobulin. Neither treatment is preferable over the other, and using them together is not coadjutant. The quicker the disease evolves, the slower treatment will take. Recovery usually takes place within the first year; after 2 years, 17 percent of patients are still not fully autonomous.
