abstractWhile in recent years anti-dementia drugs have proved to be of limited efficacy, a new way for treating patients has now been highlighted by numerous studies based on non-pharmacological approaches. The first step in the fight against dementia is prevention. Thus, according to a study published recently in the JAMA, the cognitive training of healthy elderly people leads to long-lasting benefits for the maintenance of basic activities in daily life. It seems that only prevention but also treatment for dementia can do without drugs. A fundamental element is thought to be “disease management”: this is a welfare model that involves an expert following the patient over time, coordinating the services of the various specialists that may be necessary. This type of approach appears to have even more of an impact than pharmacological treatment. Lastly, an equally important objective is the quality of life of those taking care of a person with dementia. This could improve considerably with a series of short home visits during which an expert assesses their needs, and then offers any kind of help needed, including psychological and behavioural therapy.
