abstractThe objective of this study was to assess and validate the use of the Prognostic Score (PaP Score) at the palliative care unit in Loreto, and at the same time to assess whether, and how, this instrument influences the care process. Various aspects of the care process were considered (use of morphine, use of anaesthesiological techniques to control pain, fitting of central venous catheter, blood transfusion, number of specialist examinations, intervention of psychologist) in order to see if there are any differences between the three groups of patients (A, B, C) identified by the Pap Score. In addition to this, differences were looked for in the care plans of patients who had been dealt with previously by the doctor, and those who had only been met upon their admission to the hospice. The results found demonstrate that at our hospice the PaP Score is useful in prognostic terms. The analysis of the aspects of the care process considered show greater use of morphine and greater number of sessions with the psychologist in groups with an average prognosis of greater than 30 days (B and C). There are no differences in the fitting of the central venous catheter, anaesthesiological techniques and blood transfusions between the three groups. Meanwhile, there is greater use of the CVC and less use of blood transfusions for patients who are already known at the hospice.
