University internship in family medicine

Since 2002 the University of Turin has included a compulsory internship in general medicine in the syllabus in year 6 of the degree course. The three-week-long internship takes place at the surgeries of GPs selected as tutors. Students are invited to attend seminars and carry out practical exercises at the surgery.
Students’ feedback was gathered anonymously at the end of the internship. It displays a high level of satisfaction with the activities carried out, especially the practical exercises. It also shows a positive change in the perception of family medicine. The Turin experiment therefore demonstrates that general practice, which is still generally seen as a secondary discipline, can benefit from educational efforts.
