abstractChronic diseases are mistakenly considered the prerogative of wealthy countries and the lifestyle that their citizens lead. The World Health Organisation, in its 2005 report focusing entirely on chronic diseases, intends to break down that prejudice. Indeed, out of 17 million deaths each year that can be ascribed to chronic diseases, 80 percent live in lower-middle income countries. In addition to these are deaths cause by infectious diseases. The situation is complicated further by healthcare systems and social contexts in which it is notoriously difficult to prevent, diagnose, treat and care for the sick. Matters appear even more serious is we consider the younger age of the patients compared to those in developed countries. For these reasons, the WHO report points to the importance of taking action with a new objective in mind: to reduce the predicted trend in the mortality rate for chronic diseases by 2 percent each year until 2015.
