abstractA questionnaire was distributed to around 200 GPs in the Lazio region to determine whether there is a correlation between declared knowledge of the most widespread guidelines for treating hypertension, and medical practice. Their knowledge of the guidelines and literature was studied in relation to various indicators: knowledge of targets by age category, prescription of diagnostic tests and drugs. The results are comparable to those found in other surveys, even in countries with a different healthcare system. They showed that only 42 percent of the sample can be considered familiar with the guidelines. This sub-group reports more appropriate conduct and a wider spectrum of competences compared to the group of those who are not familiar with the guidelines. However, the most marked differences were found in areas that are not strictly clinical but relate to organisation and conduct. Nevertheless, it is useful to note that while the figures reported often achieve statistical significance, only in a few cases do they seem to be significant.
