abstractTelevision and newspapers describe, to a certain extent, human suffering and wars around the world.
Medici senza frontiere denounces the quality and quantity of the information given about the main humanitarian crises, by reporting data provided by Orao News which analysed 22 newspapers and 13 periodicals, and from the Pavia Monitoring Centre which studies the two main national TV news broadcasts. There are eight countries which have international humanitarian crises that are the most ignored by the media. Tuberculosis, malnutrition and malaria are the health emergencies that are most underestimated. Political debate and the war on terrorism heavily influence the choice of which countries are discussed, to the detriment of the interests of the civil population. |
