abstractThere is a correlation between a rise in the values of intraocular pressure (IOP) and the risk of developing glaucoma; individuals with normal sight but a family history of this disease, short-sightedness or diabetes, or with visual field defects must constantly monitor their IOP (threshold value between 18mmHg and 21mmHg). For other individuals an isolated measurement of a change in IOP is not enough to define a risk of glaucoma. The examination must therefore be accompanied by further checks. Beta-blocker drugs may cause bradycardia, bronchospasm or heart failure; carbonic anhydrase inhibitors can cause discomfort and anorexia. Trabeculoplasty and filtration surgery are alternative to these drugs, but do not provide definitive results and are not without risks of their own.
