abstractTraditionally, General Practitioners (GPs) have been given the role of translating the patient’s needs into medical/healthcare services in order to formulate a diagnosis, cure the disease or alleviate the patient’s complaints.
For at least two centuries, this outline of behaviour has gradually been eroded. This is an effect of the socio-cultural revolution and the increasing access that patients have to medical knowledge. This study aims to document the inducement of prescriptions in general medicine, by the various members of the local system (specialists, both public and private, and patients). The study shows that during a visit to the doctor, instead of explaining their symptoms patients often overturn the traditional roles by directly asking the doctor to prescribe them certain tests or examinations. |
