abstractThe increased tendency for people to travel to tropical or sub-tropical countries for various reasons has changed the epidemiology of malaria; until a few decades ago, it was believed to be limited to countries in Africa, Asia or Latin America. It is therefore necessary for family doctors to know which preventive measures are recommended, both in pharmacological and behavioural terms. In particular, doctors must adapt the treatment to the patient’s characteristics, his needs and depending on the areas he is going to and length of stay. Indeed, the risks and benefits of the various drugs must be considered according to: the treatment changes if the infective agents in the area visited are or are not resistant to chloroquine; whether the person is a pregnant woman; whether it is a long stay.
